West Wittering, situated in Chichester, West Sussex, is the ideal location if you’re looking for a relaxing yet scenic UK getaway. This village, although small, is home to one of Britain’s most gorgeous sandy beaches and is rich in history, making it a popular location for holiday makers in search of a serene escape.
History
Located near Chichester Harbour, West Wittering was designated an area of outstanding natural beauty in 1964 because of its scenic landscape and seascape.
An early Saxon settlement, the Domesday Survey of 1086 confirmed that the land around the area was held by Lord Roger Montgomery and the church, with a population of approximately 150. Fast forward a few hundred years, and there’s also evidence that West Wittering was in use as a port in the 14th century, with the boats loading at Snow Hill.
Until the mid-20th century the West Wittering area remained a rural backwater despite proposals for a West Wittering Harbour Reclamation scheme in the 1930s, which weren’t implemented. However, with time, the village became a favoured retreat for the wealthy – with Henry Royce, of Rolls Royce, moving to the area in 1917 until his death in 1933.
West Wittering Beach
Playing host to one of the only sandy beaches in Sussex, West Wittering is well worth a visit even if you aren’t staying nearby.
As a private beach, visitors will need to pay for parking for the day (book online to receive a discounted rate), but with it comes the benefits of parking attendants, lifeguards, and a truly well-kept seaside. There’s also an on-site cafe with a wide selection of food and drink available.
At low tide, the 100 hectares of soft sand provides visitors with a long overview of the land, so whether you’re looking to take a stroll or enjoy beach games, there’ll be plenty of space for you to make the most of your day at the seaside.
When you’re ready to dive in to the West Wittering sea, make sure to take a dip in the safe zones (paying attention to lifeguard flags and instructions).
